WASHINGTON NATIONAL OPERA ORCHESTRA
Founded in 1956, Washington National Opera is recognized as one of America’s leading opera companies. Under the leadership of Plácido Domingo, WNO continues to build on its rich history by offering operas of the highest artistic quality. In addition, WNO fulfills its mission by serving as a vital resource throughout the DC metro area, bringing opera to broad and diverse constituencies through its award-winning education and community programs.
Comprised of 61 musicians, the Washington National Opera Orchestra is the musical heart of the company. A reflection of WNO’s steady growth and its commitment to opera of the highest quality, the company has maintained a professional orchestra since 1978. In 1993, renowned German conductor Heinz Fricke was appointed Music Director, a position he held for 18 years. Under his leadership, the orchestra reached a new level of excellence, and is consistently praised by critics and audiences alike. The Orchestra has played under the baton of such famed talents as Daniel Barenboim, Valery Gergiev, and James Levine, and Mstislav Rostropovich, and accompanied WNO on its 2002 Japan tour.
